Demystifying Anarchism, Honoring David Graeber and a Chat with Karma Chick about Spells #HeliumRadio

What’s up to my telegenic trouble makers and bright billowy bliss cats!

Welcome back one and all to the BNP, delivering that cream of the crop content come rain, snow, sleet… or smoke. The desert sun this September Saturday is a liminal copper coin in the hazy smoky sky. I spritz the tropical plants in my apt and send wishes of rain to the West Coast. What is there to do but move forward with our projects, persist in pursuing our passions, and persevering in following the promise of our dreams.

It’s in this vein of celebrating the stubborn resiliency and determination of the human spirit, and to pay homage to the eminently possible, that we examine this week a topic that’s timely, crucial, and often disingenuously disparaged by mandarins of the state: Anarchism.

Contrary to what old Uncle Sniffs Joe says, anarchy cannot be arrested and incarcerated. We know how much you love incarcerating stuff Uncle Sniffs, but you can’t arrest a concept. Nor should you try. There is nothing chaotic, violent or antisocial about the philosophical tendencies of Anarchism.

This episode is an attempt to demystify this idea of Anarchy, anarchists and anarchism (oh my), and push back on the narrative that paints anarchists as loose fuses, hot wires and hostile enemies of the state.

I’d even venture to say: it is the state that vilifies so-called anarchists that is the antisocial element in the equation. A just state would recognize the value and critical importance of anarchistic behavior in our day to day means of social reproduction within the greater society, and afford the concept its just respect and contemplation.

This episode is also in honor of the late author and anarchist activist David Graeber, who wrote Bullshit Jobs and Debt: The First 5,000 Years. David Graeber passed away on September 2nd in Venice, Italy. Rest in Power comrade.

Finally, we place the proverbial cherry on top of this fair ep with a call from my dear friend and soul sister Karma Chick, who checks in from Texas. She had to run to a wedding, so the 2nd part of our conversation will be coming soon.

Thank you to my beloved listeners and generous patrons. I couldn’t do this without you.
