Set in 1750 in St. Domingue before it became Haiti, Evelyn Trouillot’s novel The Infamous Rosalie(University of Nebraska Press; $19.95) is inspired by the tale of an African midwife who kept a cord of seventy knots, each one marking a child she had killed at birth. Trouillot is the author of five novels, two books of poetry, three collections of short stories and books for children.
